With 300 sunny days a year, 7 regional parks and 19 natural areas, the Region of Murcia offers opportunities to practice all kinds of leisure outdoor activities, also enjoying water sports throughout the year.

Natural and active Murcia

The Region of Murcia has more than 100 trails approved by the Mountaineering Federation of the Region of Murcia (FMRM). The following routes stand out:

  • Vía Verde del Noroeste: An 80-kilometres route on the old road that linked Murcia with Caravaca. It is a route where you can also enjoy unique landscapes such as the "badlands", mountains with large pine forests and a rich monumental heritage.
  • Sendero de la Costa Cálida, the GR-92: With almost 180 kilometres, it skirts the entire coast of the Region of Murcia, through old mining roads, trails and cattle tracks that the Romans already traveled along the coast.
  • Sendero del Norte, the GR-7: It runs 173 kilometres through Jumilla, Cieza, Calasparra and Moratalla, crossing areas of great beauty such as the banks of the Alhárabe river and also mountainous areas such as the Revolcadores massif.





We can enjoy sports and nature through various cycling routes located in inland nature reserves and along the coast.

Different options are offered for cycling:

  • Eurovelo: European network of 17 long-distance cycling routes where the EuroVelo 8 Mediterranean route crosses the Region of Murcia in its 217 kilometres from Águilas, passing through Mazarrón, Cartagena, San Pedro del Pinatar and Murcia.
  • Greenways: More than 250 kilometres of old railway lines have been conditioned for the practice of cycling, which allows you to enjoy very varied landscapes throughout the Region.
  • Espubike: The Sierra Espuña Regional Park offers 146 kilometres of bicycle routes.
  • Espuroad : Sierra Espuña also offers 80 kilometres of routes through its paved roads that connect population centres.
  • IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) Mazarrón routes: The Tierras de la Perdiz route records 44.7 kilometres through mountain lands and boulevards in the northwest of the municipality, while the Las Calas route runs for 48.8 km through the western area, through the Mediterranean coves and bordering the coastal mountains.
  • Other routes through varied landscapes of different municipalities of the Region.


The Region of Murcia has numerous limestone caves and cavities that have been formed by the action of underground water networks over millions of years.

There are caves "for all audiences", ideal for groups of all ages where the following stand out:

  • The Cueva del Puerto (Calasparra) has galleries, ceilings and walls with unique formations.
  • The Cave-Sima de la Serreta (Cieza), which has rock art exhibitions and vestiges of prehistory, Roman and the Middle Ages is from the Islamic period.

In addition, there are other sports caves that are reserved only for the technical practice of speleology. Among them, the Sima de la Higuera, in Pliego, stands out, which in 2020 was declared a Natural Monument of the Region of Murcia.



The Region of Murcia has two seas on a single coast, the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean, an average annual temperature of more than 18ºC and more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year. It has impressive cliffs, wide sandy beaches, coves and ports in which you can practice all kinds of water activities.

Along the coast, from Águilas to Mazarrón, coastal municipalities of the Mar Menor and La Manga del Mar Menor you can practice numerous activities such as sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, rowing or canoeing, among others.

The area of Cabo de Palos - Islas Hormigas - Isla Grosa, La Azohía, Mazarrón and Águilas has an impressive richness of its seabeds that offers exceptional places for diving.





The Segura river passes through the municipalities in the interior of the Region of Murcia crossing landscapes of enormous natural value and beauty, while offering possibilities for practicing active tourism.

Among other options, the Descent of the Segura River stands out: As it passes through the municipalities of Calasparra, Cieza or Blanca, you can enjoy a quiet river walk or go down in a canoe or kayak, as well as rafting in the Cañón de Almadenes or the Ricote Valley.


The Murcian landscape offers a varied panoramic view of singular beauty where the massifs and mountains, the riverside areas, its crops or the coastline stand out. These views can be appreciated from the sky practicing different activities depending on the level of experience of each person:

  • Ballooning, where you can enjoy, for example, the landscapes of Sierra Espuña, Carrascoy or Sierra de La Muela among others.
  • Paragliding, hang gliding, zip line or gliding, for those who seek to raise the adrenaline. It can be practiced, among others, in Alhama de Murcia, Lorca or Murcia.
  • Panoramic flights in small planes from the aerodromes of Totana, Los Martínez del Puerto (Murcia), Alcantarilla or San Javier.


The Region of Murcia offers a wide environmental diversity with inland and coastal natural heritage that can be enjoyed especially in its natural areas and beautiful landscapes. A wide representation of them have some form of protection. The following stand out:

  • Regional Parks: Cabo Cope- Puntas de Calnegre, Calblanque- Monte de las Cenizas- Peña del Águila, El Valle and Carrascoy, Salinas and Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar, Sierra de El Carche, Sierra de la Pila and Sierra Espuña.
  • Nature Reserve: Groves and Ribera de Cañaverosa Forests.
  • Protected Landscapes: Barrancos de Gebas, Cuatro Calas, open spaces and islands of the Mar Menor, Humedal del Ajauque and Rambla Salada and Sierra de las Moreras.
  • Natural Monuments: Monte Arabí.
  • Other Natural Areas: Almadenes Canyon, Islands and islets of the Mediterranean coast, Sierra de la Muela, Cabo Tiñoso and Roldán, Cabezo Gordo, Saladares del Guadalentín and Sierra de Salinas.
