BNSF Railway’s Belen, N.M., rail yard serves as a regional maintenance and fueling facility for trains up to 10,000 feet long.
The BNSF facility, which extends about 14,000 feet end to end, is positioned geographically from north to south. Tracks in each direction converge into one lead at both of the yard’s ends. Up to 90 trains, a day move both east and west through the system, requiring Belen to have the largest signal mast in BNSF’s Southwest Division.
Two major highways (I-25 and I-40) bisect the city, providing national access for business and industry in the city as well as for several motor freight companies operating in the Albuquerque area. New Mexico is a net-consumptive state, resulting in very competitive outgoing freight rates. For additional access points into New Mexico, explore the New Mexico Tradeport.

Belen Regional Airport was originally conceived as Goebel Airfield, named for the famed stunt pilot and record-breaker Col. Arthur C. Goebel. Years later, it became an airport of regional influence, expanding to two fully operational runways, and took on the name of former Mayor Neel Alexander.
Built on the west mesa a mile west of I-25, the airport is home to over 50 aircraft, a skydive club, a propeller maintenance facility, aerial photography, and other aviation businesses. It is also an air operations training site for the United States Air Force.
An airport lounge features restrooms, internet access, shower, classroom/conference room, and a kitchenette. There are small and large plots of land available at the airport for development of aviation businesses. Rules, regulations and minimum standards are available online at the following link: Belen Municipal Code Section 11.
