Anchoring the west-end of Penn Street and Downtown Reading, Reading Movies 11 & IMAX Theater was among the first fully digital theatres in the country and represented many of the early digital 3D experiences available to customers in the U.S.

Intimate performing arts theater on the Reading Area Community College Campus opened in 2007.

Located across the street from the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, IMAX Theater, and RACC campus, the apartment building features 59 units and private parking. The building opened in 2012.

Hotel to apartment conversion completed by Shuman Development Group in 2017 features 97 one- and two-bedroom market-rate apartments and private parking. More project details here.

Originally constructed in 1909, the historic Berks County Trust Building has been restored and repositioned as a mixed-use destination in Downtown Reading by Shuman Development Group. The 98,000-square-foot project includes office space, retail, a food hall, and market-rate apartments, bringing new activity and investment to the urban core. 

Total Investment: $18 Million



A 43,000-square-foot full-service grocery store bringing fresh, affordable food options to Downtown Reading, including culturally relevant products not widely available in regional chains. The project transforms a long-abandoned city garage into a vibrant community asset, creating 120 full-time and 30 part-time jobs while expanding wholesale distribution to support local corner stores. Backed by New Markets Tax Credits and strong public-private partnerships, this investment strengthens food access, workforce opportunity, and neighborhood revitalization.

Penn Square Plaza has been repositioned by KNG Equity to provide modern, flexible office suites in the heart of Downtown Reading. The newly remodeled space offers short- and long-term office solutions, 24/7 building access, and professional conference facilities designed to support entrepreneurs, small businesses, and remote professionals seeking dedicated workspace. This investment strengthens the downtown business environment by providing high-quality office space that supports evolving work patterns and local enterprise growth.

Reading CollegeTowne is a strategy and model being led by Alvernia University for championing economic redevelopment in Downtown Reading. In December 2019, Alvernia announced that it entered into an agreement of sale on 401 Penn St. as the genesis for Reading CollegeTowne. The building opened in the Fall of 2021. 

In February 2026, Alvernia University kicked off a $23 million project on the 45,000 square-foot American House at 354 Penn Street as part of the CollegeTowne

Investment: $60 M


Barley Square Apartments is a new four-story residential development by Woda Cooper Companies. The project delivers 57 one- and two-bedroom apartments designed to provide high-quality, affordable housing for low-income seniors.

The historic Medical Arts Building, an Art Deco landmark constructed in 1929, is being restored and redeveloped into a mixed-use residential and retail destination by Shuman Development Group. The 42,000-square-foot project will transform a long-vacant high-rise into luxury apartments with ground-floor retail, preserving the building’s distinctive architectural details through a certified historic restoration.

Formerly a passenger rail train station restored by Berks Area Transit Authority in 2013 – now home to Saucony Creek Franklin Street Brewpub opened in July 2019.

The historic D.S.W. Hosiery Mill at 1125 Moss Street is being transformed into a 55-unit residential community through the adaptive reuse of a century-old industrial building. Led by Posch Development Group in partnership with Duka Properties. 

Total Investment: $6 M


The former Albright College dormitory at 1420–1430 N. 13th Street is being redeveloped into a 38-unit apartment community through the adaptive reuse of the historic four-story building. Led by Spak Development Group, the project will convert a century-old institutional property into modern residential housing while combining adjacent parcels to improve site functionality and parking. The redevelopment introduces new housing options and reinvestment in the surrounding neighborhood.

HDC MidAtlantic and Landis Quality Living have secured $17 million in LIHTC funding to transform a vacant industrial building in downtown Reading into Cornerstone at 6th & Chestnut, a 46-unit affordable housing community for adults 62 and older. The project will offer income-restricted apartments with supportive amenities to help seniors age in place, with construction expected to begin in October 2026 and move-ins starting January 2028.

Anchoring the west-end of Penn Street and Downtown Reading, the Reading Area Community College campus offers associates degrees, professional development, and training to over 4,000 students on an annual basis.

A 145,000 square foot, five-story community arts campus f/ a small movie theater, artist studios, galleries, art classes, glass, wood, and ceramics studios, making it the largest interactive arts center in the U.S. and opened in 2006.

Top-performing DoubleTree in the U.S., the hotel opened in 2015 and offers flexible event space for up to 2,000 guests, including an amphitheater, boardroom, and 15 meeting rooms.

The Arena opened in 2001 seats up to 8,800 for concerts and 7,200 for hockey, is home to the Reading Royals, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, of the ECHL.

The award-winning Reading Public Library is located at 100 S 5th Street - anchoring the south side of the downtown area. In May 2018, Reading Public Library was selected as a recipient of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
